Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

The Department of Otolaryngology is dedicated to treatment of a wide range of diseases of the ear, nose and throat, as well as head and neck abnormalities. Methods used here are highly efficient and of the best quality. The Department is perfectly equipped to treat in- and outpatients. Its work is supported by the administrative office.

Our outpatient facilities are equipped with various endoscopic devices as well as microscopes and stroboscopic instruments for tests on the vocal cords. There are special facilities to perform electroneuronography of the facial peripheral nerve. There is also an operating room for routine surgeries. The Department can simultaneously accommodate 21 patients: there are three rooms, designed for one patient, and six three-bed rooms. The administrative office combines the offices for the Head and the Head Deputy, the secretary office, physician offices, library and classrooms for the student residents. Each year, the Department conducts over 2,000 surgical procedures. The number of the treated outpatients, both adults and children, is close to 18 000 patients per year.

Our methods of work:

  1. Otologic surgery to restore hearing (Prof. Kronberg, Prof. Wolfe and Dr. Horowitz).
  2. Endoscopic surgery on the nose and sinuses (Prof. Kronberg, Dr. Ben-Shoshan, Dr. Bardeen, Dr. Migirov and Dr. Rosenberg).
  3. Operation to implant cochlear implants (Prof. Kronberg and Dr. Migiro Lily). By the end of 2002, about 280 operations have been performed to implant cochlear implants, mostly of pediatric character.
  4. Surgery to restore mobility in the case of facial paralysis (Prof. Kronberg and Dr. Migirov). A wide range of operations for this condition includes the surgical implantation of the golden plates into the upper eyelid to create hypoglossal facial anastomosis, as well as operations to create "end to end" anastomosis to restore the facial nerve using its undamaged areas (e.g. of a ramus, innervating the upper eyelid). The Department communicates constantly and closely with the Institute of Rehabilitation at Tel Ha-Shomer Hospital to conduct computer-based types of therapy, aimed at restoring mobility of the facial muscles.
  5. Operation to restore the larynx and trachea of children and adults (Prof. Wolfe and Dr. Faber).
  6. Surgery to remove the head and neck tumors (Prof. Talma, Dr. Horowitz and Dr. Bardeen).
  7. Surgery to remove various tumors at the skull base. The surgery is performed jointly with the Department of Neurosurgery (Prof. Cronenberg).
  8. Treatment of tinnitus, which involves a combination of medications, biofeedback and hypnosis (Dr. Rahima).
  9. Endoscopic removal of stones in the salivary glands and salivary ducts. The endoscope allows a microsurgical infiltration into the salivary ducts and glands to diagnose a possible obstruction and subsequently remove the stones (Dr. Rahima).
  10. Physiotherapy treatment of patients suffering from vertigo (Ms. Hartsanu). The diagnostics of pathology is performed at the Institute of Audiology.
  11. Cancer treatment in cooperation with the Cancer Center of the hospital (Prof. Talma, Dr. Horowitz, Dr. Bardeen, and Dr. Pepper from the Cancer Center).
  12. Diagnostics of voice disorders in collaboration with the Institute of Communications, which includes the use of stroboscopic instruments to test the vocal cords (Prof. Wolf).
